Marlon Brando's private atoll developed into a 35-villa all-inclusive resort by Pacific Beachcomber — fully carbon-neutral with seawater air conditioning, accessed only by private 20-minute charter flight from Tahiti.
What works
- Private atoll — no day-trip access
- Carbon-neutral operations with SWAC seawater AC
- All-inclusive bundles all dining and most activities
Watch-outs
- Mandatory $750/pp charter flight from Tahiti
- Rate floor above $3,800 in any season
The Brando occupies the 12-island atoll of Tetiaroa, 53 kilometres north of Tahiti — Marlon Brando bought the atoll in 1966 after filming Mutiny on the Bounty and willed it to be developed as a sustainable luxury resort, with the property opening in 2014 under Pacific Beachcomber. Access is the property's defining logistic: the 20-minute charter flight from Tahiti Faa'a Airport on the resort's Air Tetiaroa fleet ($750 per person round-trip, mandatory) is the only access route — no public ferry, no helicopter alternative. Long-haul gateway is Tahiti via Air Tahiti Nui from LAX (8 hours) or French Bee from Paris-Orly via SFO (22 hours).
The 35 villas — 30 one-bedroom, four two-bedroom, and The Residence at three bedrooms — are arranged along a 1.6-kilometre crescent beach on the main motu (island) of Onetahi. Every villa is freestanding with a private pool, a walled garden, and direct beach access through a coconut-grove path. The design by Pierre Lacombe and Stephen Cox uses local materials (coconut wood, basalt stone, woven coconut fronds) with deliberate restraint; no two villas have identical floor plans. The Brando family Residence (now bookable) was the original villa Marlon Brando designed for his own use and retains the basalt-stone bath and the koa-wood library.
Sustainability is the property's brand signature and operational reality: seawater air conditioning (SWAC) pulls 4°C water from 920 metres depth via a 2.5-kilometre pipe to chill the resort, eliminating 90 percent of the AC electricity demand; solar capacity provides 70 percent of the remaining power, with coconut-oil-powered generators covering peak load. The Tetiaroa Society research station on the same motu runs ongoing coral, turtle, and seabird research; daily guest lectures are bundled into the all-inclusive package. The atoll's six outer motus are protected nesting sites with restricted access — guests can visit by guided boat trip only.
The all-inclusive rate ($3,800 to $5,400 per villa per night excluding the charter flight) bundles every meal, all soft drinks and in-room mini-bar, snorkelling and kayaking equipment, daily fitness classes, and the Tetiaroa Society programme. Excluded categories are spa treatments at Varua, wine pairings beyond the standard list, scuba diving with the on-site PADI centre, and deep-sea fishing charters. Two restaurants are run under Guy Martin's direction (Le Grand Véfour, Paris): the Beachcomber Café for breakfast and lunch, and Les Mutinés for fine dining. The structural low season is February to March (post-cyclone shoulder); the property closes for a 3-week refurbishment window every November.

Frequently asked
Is the charter flight from Tahiti included?
No — the mandatory return charter from Tahiti Faa'a runs ~$750 per person on the resort's own Air Tetiaroa fleet, operated by Air Moorea. This is the only access route; no public ferry, no helicopter alternative.
Is the all-inclusive really all-inclusive?
Yes for all meals, soft drinks, in-room mini-bar, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle-boarding, fitness classes, and the daily Tetiaroa Society lecture programme. Excluded: spa treatments, wine pairings above the standard list, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing.
The Brando or Four Seasons Bora Bora?
Four Seasons Bora Bora for the overwater bungalows and the Mount Otemanu sightline. The Brando for the private-island setting, the carbon-neutral operations, and the Brando family heritage. Different propositions; The Brando runs roughly 60% above Four Seasons at comparable categories.
