Joali Maldives opened in November 2018 on Muravandhoo island in Raa Atoll, a 40-minute seaplane transfer north of Male — the most northern of the established luxury-flagship locations, sharing the Raa Atoll positioning with Soneva Fushi (the same atoll, eight minutes apart by speedboat). The 27-acre island carries 73 villas at unusually low density for the rate band, and the resort runs on the one-island-one-resort principle that Soneva established and Cheval Blanc Randheli extended. Autoban (Istanbul) designed the public spaces and most villa interiors; Anar Mikayilov designed the Beach Villas; the Saoke teppanyaki room is by Tokyo's Naka Studio.
The defining programmatic difference versus other Maldives flagships is the in-residence art programme — Joali commissions permanent site-specific work from international artists, currently including a Misha Kahn glass-and-bronze pavilion at the reception jetty, a Porky Hefer manta-ray pod suspended over Bellinis restaurant, and a Doug Aitken sound piece installed underwater on the house reef. The Joali Being sister island in the same atoll (eight minutes by speedboat) opened in 2021 as the wellness-only counterpart with no children and minimum five-night immersion programmes; guests at Joali Maldives can transfer for day spa visits but not overnight.
