Piazza del Popolo's terraced palazzo with Rome's most-photographed hotel garden — Rocco Forte's flagship and the city's quietest five-star with a Spanish Steps address.

What works

  • Terraced Secret Garden — Rome's most photographed hotel courtyard
  • Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo on the doorstep
  • Stravinskij Bar consistently ranked in World's 50 Best

Watch-outs

  • Entry-category rooms compact at 28 sqm
  • Wellness floor smaller than Aman / Bulgari peers

Hotel de Russie occupies a Valadier-designed palazzo on Via del Babuino, the street that runs between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna — the centro storico walkability is the single defining feature, with the Spanish Steps four minutes south on foot, the Pincio overlook three minutes west, and the Villa Borghese gardens the same distance north-east. Flaminio metro (line A) sits at Piazza del Popolo two minutes from the lobby; Spagna metro is six minutes south. The building was a literal stopover for the Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century before Rocco Forte converted it into the chain's Rome flagship in 2000.

The Secret Garden is the design centrepiece — a terraced courtyard climbing the Pincio hillside behind the hotel, with bay trees, orange trees, and a small fountain at the upper level. The garden is the breakfast room in shoulder weather and the dinner room for Le Jardin de Russie May through October. The Olga Polizzi-designed rooms refurbished in the 2024 programme use a Roman travertine and terracotta palette; pre-refresh rooms in the Babuino wing are still in service and noticeably older. Confirm refurbishment status at booking — the front desk will not move you post-arrival without a paid upgrade.

Le Jardin de Russie is the all-day Italian restaurant under chef Fulvio Pierangelini (also of Bulgari Hotels' culinary leadership) — the menu runs uncomplicated Roman cooking with strong cacio e pepe and a daily-changing crudo plate. The Stravinskij Bar is the proper destination bar inside the property — ranked in the World's 50 Best Bars list every year since 2017 and the only Rome hotel bar with a consistent local-resident clientele rather than guests-only. The De Russie Wellness Zone in the basement is the property's weakness — a serviceable 22-metre pool and a hammam, but no proper spa-floor feel compared with Bulgari or Aman peers.

Booking strategy: Rocco Forte Verified is the direct-book loyalty programme — registration is free and unlocks a fourth-night-free benefit on stays of four or more nights at every hotel in the group, plus daily breakfast for two. The benefit alone makes a five-night stay at the rack rate cheaper than a four-night stay booked via OTA. Rome's structural low season is the first three weeks of January and the August Ferragosto window; Easter, Christmas, and the late-September fashion month drive the hardest-to-book periods. Request a Garden View room above the second floor for the full terraced-courtyard sightline.

Frequently asked

Hotel de Russie or Bulgari Roma for a first stay?

De Russie for the garden and Piazza del Popolo address; Bulgari for the newer hardware and rooftop pool. De Russie runs roughly 30% cheaper at comparable categories.

Is the Secret Garden open to non-guests?

Yes for lunch and dinner at Le Jardin de Russie — book three weeks ahead at weekends. Drinks-only access through the Stravinskij Bar requires no reservation but seating is first-come from 17:00.

Best room category for first stay?

Deluxe Garden View on the second or third floor — the courtyard sightline is the design experience, and the 35 sqm footprint reads as a proper room rather than the compact entry Classic.
