Patagonia Argentina Routing Guide (2026): The 7, 10 and 14-Night Itineraries
By Alex Marlowe · May 16, 2026 · 15 min read
Argentine Patagonia is the textbook routing problem in South American luxury travel — four geographically separated clusters (Bariloche in the Lake District, El Calafate at Perito Moreno, El Chaltén at the Fitz Roy massif, Peninsula Valdés on the Atlantic coast) separated by 1,200-2,400 km of empty road, with no inter-cluster ground transport beyond the textbook 22-hour Ruta 40 self-drive that no luxury itinerary should attempt. The decision the routing makes — which clusters, which order, which sequence — rewrites the trip more than any individual hotel booking. Get the routing wrong and the trip becomes the textbook Buenos Aires hub-and-spoke return-flight rhythm that burns three nights on transit. Get it right and the Patagonia week delivers the textbook signature South American luxury experience.
This guide is the routing answer. For the base-decision guide that pairs with this one see our Where to Stay in Argentine Patagonia (2026): Bariloche vs El Calafate Picks. The four clusters and the geography that decides the routing
Bariloche (BRC), San Carlos de Bariloche in Río Negro province, sits at 41° south on the eastern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi — the textbook Lake District base with the textbook Llao Llao Resort flagship, the Circuito Chico day-drive and the Cerro Catedral ski-mountain bracket. Buenos Aires luxury guide-Bariloche is 2h 20m on Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi and JetSmart, 6-8 daily flights, ARS 180,000-340,000 round-trip.
El Calafate (FTE), 1,650 km south of Bariloche on the southern shore of Lago Argentino in Santa Cruz province, sits at 50° south — the textbook Perito Moreno gateway with the textbook Eolo Patagonia's Spirit and Los Notros flagships, the in-park glacier full-day and the Upsala Glacier cruise as the textbook trip anchors. Buenos Aires-El Calafate is 3h 10m, 3-4 daily flights, ARS 220,000-410,000 round-trip.
El Chaltén has no airport — the textbook access is the 220 km drive north from El Calafate (3h 20m on Ruta 40, recently paved end-to-end), with the textbook Hertz, Localiza or Europcar rental at FTE airport or the textbook private transfer at US$320-480 per vehicle one-way. The textbook Chaltén bracket is the trekking-window cluster — Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado as the textbook three-trek rotation — with no hotel above the four-star tier and the textbook Aguas Arriba Lodge or Los Cerros del Chaltén as the textbook visitor anchors.
Peninsula Valdés (REL), Trelew airport 1,400 km north of El Calafate on the Atlantic coast in Chubut province, sits at 43° south — the textbook marine-wildlife bracket with the textbook southern-right-whale season (June-November), the Magellanic-penguin window (October-March) and the orca-on-the-beach window (March-April). Buenos Aires-Trelew is 2h 00m, 1-2 daily flights, ARS 150,000-290,000 round-trip.
The textbook inter-cluster geography fix is the Aerolíneas Argentinas BRC-FTE direct (1h 30m, 3 flights weekly — Monday, Wednesday, Friday in the November-March peak; Monday and Friday in the April-October shoulder) and the textbook Aerolíneas FTE-REL direct (1h 20m, 2 flights weekly — Tuesday and Saturday year-round). Outside these inter-cluster flights, the routing fix is the Buenos Aires hub-and-spoke return.
The 7-night Patagonia: Bariloche-plus-El Calafate
The textbook 7-night Argentine Patagonia routing is the four-nights-Bariloche-plus-three-nights-El Calafate sequence, anchored by the BRC-FTE direct flight that eliminates the Buenos Aires return between the two clusters. The textbook booking is the November-March southern-summer window for the Bariloche-leaves and the Perito Moreno full-window operation.
- Day 1 (Saturday). Overnight flight from the home market lands at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) at 6am-8am. Textbook fix is the in-airport transfer to Aeroparque (AEP, the in-city domestic airport — 45-minute taxi at US$45-65 or the 90-minute Tienda León airport-bus at US$22 per person) and the textbook 10.30am Aerolíneas Argentinas AEP-BRC departure. Land in Bariloche 12.50pm. Llao Llao or Correntoso transfer at 1.30pm (45-minute drive). Hotel check-in 2.30pm. Textbook afternoon reset — the Llao Llao spa or the Correntoso lakefront — and the 8pm hotel dinner. Skip the dinner-out booking on the textbook landing day.
- Day 2 (Sunday). The textbook Circuito Chico day — the 60 km loop drive past Bahía López, Punto Panorámico and Lago Moreno, the textbook 4-5 hour rhythm with the textbook lunch at Cervecería Patagonia (Av. Bustillo Km 24.7) or the textbook in-property Llao Llao Bistro option. Afternoon at the hotel. Dinner at Alto el Fuego (Avenida Bustillo Km 6.5, the textbook Bariloche-asado address) or in the hotel.
- Day 3 (Monday). The textbook Cerro Tronador full-day excursion — the 6.30am departure, the 175 km drive south, the textbook Pampa Linda walk and the textbook Ventisquero Negro view, the 6.30pm return. US$140-180 per person via the textbook in-property concierge booking or the textbook self-drive alternative at US$80-110 in vehicle rental plus the textbook park entry fees.
- Day 4 (Tuesday). The textbook flexible-day Bariloche slot — the Cerro Catedral cable-car (US$30-45 per person, 25-minute ride, the textbook summit lunch at the textbook 2,000m altitude), the Cerro Campanario chairlift (US$15-22 per person, the textbook 360° view), or the textbook Brazo Tristeza catamaran (US$75-95 per person, the textbook 6-hour lake cruise with the Isla Victoria stop). Bariloche bookings rotate freely — the textbook Day 4 fix is the lower-energy option after the Cerro Tronador push.
- Day 5 (Wednesday). The textbook BRC-FTE direct on Aerolíneas Argentinas — the 11.40am departure, 1h 30m flight time, the 1.10pm landing at El Calafate. Hotel transfer at 1.40pm (the textbook 25-minute drive to in-town Eolo Patagonia or the textbook 75-minute drive to in-park Los Notros). Afternoon at the hotel. Skip the Perito Moreno booking on the arrival day; the textbook glacier full-day is the Day 6 anchor.
- Day 6 (Thursday). The textbook Perito Moreno full-day. The 7am departure from El Calafate (or the textbook in-property departure from Los Notros — 15-minute walk to the boardwalks), the textbook morning at the boardwalks (the textbook front-of-glacier view from the upper boardwalk, the calving-event observation, the 90-minute walk-rotation across the textbook five-level boardwalk system), the textbook 12.30pm lunch at the Los Notros restaurant (in-park) or the textbook packed lunch from the El Calafate hotel, the textbook 2pm-4pm Big Ice trekking (US$220-280 per person, the textbook 3-hour boots-on-glacier programme via Hielo y Aventura — book 30 days ahead) or the textbook Mini Trekking (US$140-180, the textbook 90-minute alternative for travellers without the textbook trekking experience). Return to hotel 6pm. Dinner at Don Pichón (Puerto Deseado 242, the textbook El Calafate-asado address) or in the hotel.
- Day 7 (Friday). The textbook Upsala Glacier cruise — the 8am hotel pick-up, the 9am Punta Bandera port departure, the textbook 9-hour boat day with the Upsala face approach, the Onelli Bay landing and the Spegazzini face. US$280-380 per person via the textbook MarPatag or Solo Patagonia operators. Return to hotel 6.30pm. Hotel dinner.
- Day 8 (Saturday). The textbook morning departure — the 11.30am Aerolíneas Argentinas FTE-AEP flight, 3h 10m flight time, the textbook 3.40pm arrival in Buenos Aires for the textbook evening international departure or the textbook two-night Buenos Aires add-on.
The 10-night Patagonia: insertion of El Chaltén
The textbook 10-night extension adds three nights at El Chaltén between the Bariloche and El Calafate brackets, with the textbook BRC-FTE direct repurposed as the BRC-FTE-plus-El Chaltén-drive sequence.
Days 1-4 as the 7-night Bariloche programme above.
- Day 5 (Wednesday). BRC-FTE direct as above. Land at El Calafate 1.10pm. The textbook fix is the immediate El Chaltén drive — the 1.40pm rental-car pick-up at FTE (Hertz, Localiza, Europcar) or the textbook private transfer at US$320-480 per vehicle, the textbook 220 km drive on Ruta 40 (3h 20m, recently paved end-to-end), and the 5pm-5.30pm El Chaltén arrival. Check-in at Aguas Arriba Lodge (the textbook splurge, US$680-880 per person per night all-inclusive) or Los Cerros del Chaltén (US$340-460 per night). Skip the trek booking on the arrival day; the textbook altitude-acclimatisation rhythm is the Day 5 hotel-arrival plus the Day 6 lower-energy trek.
- Day 6 (Thursday). The textbook Laguna Capri or Loma del Pliegue Tumbado trek — the 6-hour lower-energy alternatives to the Laguna de los Tres, the textbook 8am departure from the hotel, the textbook 4pm return. Afternoon at the hotel.
- Day 7 (Friday). The textbook Laguna de los Tres trek — the textbook signature El Chaltén objective, the 22 km round-trip, the textbook 7-9 hour rhythm with the textbook 1,100m elevation gain, the textbook view of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre from the textbook Mirador Laguna de los Tres summit. The textbook 6am departure from the hotel, the textbook 3pm-4pm summit, the textbook 6pm-7pm hotel return. Hotel dinner.
- Day 8 (Saturday). The textbook El Chaltén-El Calafate drive — the textbook 10am departure, the textbook noon arrival at the El Calafate hotel, the textbook afternoon at Los Notros or Eolo. The Perito Moreno bracket starts Day 9.
Days 9-10 as Days 6-7 of the 7-night programme (Perito Moreno full-day plus the Upsala Glacier cruise).
Day 11 (Tuesday)
The textbook morning departure — the FTE-AEP flight as above, the textbook evening international or the textbook Buenos Aires add-on.
The 14-night Patagonia: addition of Peninsula Valdés or Torres del Paine
The textbook 14-night routing adds the third-cluster bracket — the Atlantic-coast marine-wildlife week at Peninsula Valdés (the textbook June-November southern-right-whale window or the textbook October-March penguin-colony window) or the textbook cross-border Chilean Patagonia leg at Torres del Paine (the textbook trekking complement to the Argentine clusters, accessed via the FTE-Puerto Natales 5-hour transfer).
The Peninsula Valdés addition (Days 12-14). The textbook FTE-REL Aerolíneas direct on Tuesday or Saturday (1h 20m), the textbook 1pm Trelew arrival, the textbook 65 km drive north to Puerto Madryn or the 110 km drive to Estancia Rincón Chico on the peninsula proper. Days 12-13 are the textbook peninsula full-days (the southern-right-whale half-day boat at US$140-220 per person via Whales the Argentina edit, the Punta Tombo penguin-colony day-trip at US$110-160 per person, the Caleta Valdés sea-lion colony, the Punta Norte orca lookout). Day 14 is the textbook REL-AEP morning return. The textbook earning case is the textbook June-November or October-March windows; outside these brackets the wildlife objective collapses and the Valdés addition does not earn the routing premium.
The Torres del Paine addition (Days 12-14). The textbook FTE-Puerto Natales transfer — the 5-hour drive south on Ruta 40 plus the textbook Argentine-Chilean border crossing at Cerro Castillo (the textbook 90-minute passport-and-customs window, the textbook in-park entry at Cerro Castillo), arrival at Puerto Natales at 5pm. The textbook Tierra Patagonia, Awasi Patagonia or Explora Patagonia booking (US$1,200-2,400 per person per night all-inclusive). Days 13-14 are the textbook in-park excursion days (the Base Torres trek, the French Valley, the Grey Glacier catamaran). The textbook 14-night Argentine-plus-Chilean Patagonia is the textbook flagship South American luxury booking — the textbook splurge that the textbook 10-night ceiling cannot accommodate.
The seasonality and the textbook window selection
- November-March (the southern summer). The textbook flagship window — the textbook 22:00 sunset in late December, the textbook 15-22°C El Calafate daytime and the textbook 18-26°C Bariloche, the textbook full Perito Moreno operation, the textbook El Chaltén trekking window. The textbook compromise is the high-season rate band (30-50% above the May-August shoulder) and the textbook accommodation pressure (the textbook 6-9 month booking lead at Llao Llao, Eolo and Los Notros).
- April (the autumn-colour window). The textbook Bariloche-leaves window — the textbook lenga and ñire deciduous turn in early-mid April, the textbook 8-15°C daytime, the textbook half-rate-band drop from the December-February peak, and the textbook still-open operation at El Calafate. The textbook compromise is the El Chaltén weather (the textbook closing-window for the high-altitude treks, the textbook 50-50 weather-window probability) and the textbook tightening of the inter-cluster Aerolíneas schedule.
- June-August (the southern winter). The textbook Cerro Catedral ski-window — the textbook 80-day-season operation at Cerro Catedral above Bariloche, the textbook 2-5°C Bariloche daytime, the textbook full-snow conditions. The textbook El Calafate and El Chaltén clusters are largely closed (the textbook Perito Moreno boardwalks remain open with the textbook restricted-operation schedule, but the textbook glacier full-day and the textbook Upsala cruise do not operate). The textbook southern-right-whale window at Peninsula Valdés runs June-November and is the textbook winter case for the Atlantic-coast routing.
- October-November (the spring shoulder). The textbook re-opening of El Calafate and El Chaltén operations, the textbook tail of the Cerro Catedral ski season (closes mid-October), the textbook 10-15°C daytime, the textbook 30-40% rate drop from the December-February peak. The textbook visitor-pressure window for travellers who want the textbook Patagonia experience without the textbook high-season booking lead. The textbook compromise is the Bariloche-leaves window (the textbook bare-deciduous-trees, no colour) and the textbook El Chaltén weather (the textbook 50-50 trek-window probability).
