Two carriers, two opposite product strategies
Qatar Airways and Etihad both fly out of small Gulf hubs into the same European, Asian and Australian markets, and they price competitively against each other on most routes. They have made opposite product decisions. Qatar invested in Qsuite — a Business Class product that systematically pulls features from First (doors, quad-pod configurations, couple-friendly double beds) into the Business cabin, and abandoned dedicated First Class entirely on the bulk of its fleet. Etihad invested in the headline three-room Residence (and the still-extraordinary Apartment) on its A380 fleet while operating a fairly conventional 1-2-1 Business product on the rest of the network. The result is two carriers with opposite shapes: Qatar has the strongest mid-tier in the sky and no First; Etihad has the strongest First in the sky on six routes and a Business product that does not lead its category.
Qsuite — the cabin and the configurations
Qsuite operates a 1-2-1 staggered layout with full sliding doors to head height and movable partitions that turn the centre pairs into a double bed (Qsuite Doubles, rows D/G) and the centre quads into a four-person dining and sleeping pod (Qsuite Quads, rows D/G with E/F window-side as the partners). The seat itself is the Collins Super Diamond derivative — 21.5 inches wide, 78-inch full-flat bed, leather-and-felt finish, 21.5-inch IFE screen. The Quad configuration is unique to Qatar and unique in commercial aviation: four travelling companions can hold a proper dinner at one table at 38,000 feet, then sleep in flat beds without ever leaving the four-pod arrangement. The Doubles configuration in the centre rows turns the seat-partition into a queen-bed mattress with shared linens — operationally similar to Singapore Suites' double-bed pairing but at Business-class price.
Etihad — Apartment, Residence and the rest
The Etihad A380 First product splits in two. The Apartment (nine suites on the upper deck, 1-2-1, the standard First product) is the genuinely best-in-category non-Singapore First seat in the sky in 2026 — a 58-inch leather chair with a separate 80-inch bed, a hard-wall enclosed suite with a sliding door, full Acqua di Parma toiletries, Christofle dining service and the Savoy-trained Flying Chef onboard for à la carte preparation. Rates run AED 28,000–34,000 round-trip AUH-LHR (USD 7,600–9,200) — comfortably above paid Qsuite, but a different product class. The Residence is the three-room private apartment at the front of the upper deck (living room, bedroom, en-suite shower bathroom) — one Residence per A380, operating only on London, New York JFK, Sydney and Melbourne services. Paid Residence runs USD 22,000–32,000 round-trip — special-occasion territory, the only commercial-aviation product where the price reflects a privately-staffed cabin.

Service and ground experience
Qatar's ground product at Doha — the Al Safwa First Lounge (yes, despite no First Class onboard, Al Safwa accepts oneworld Emerald and paid-Qsuite-on-stopover passengers in some configurations) and the Qsuite-class Al Mourjan Garden Lounge — is genuinely one of the best in the world: garden installations, à la carte dining with a credible Middle Eastern menu, and a private shower-suite block. Etihad's First Class Lounge & Spa at Abu Dhabi runs a Six Senses-operated spa with complimentary 30-minute treatments and one of the few truly quiet sleep rooms in any premium lounge. Onboard, Qatar's crew service runs at very consistently high level — the strongest training programme of any non-Asian carrier — and Etihad's Flying Chef and Flying Butler programmes add a layer of personalisation that no Business cabin can match.
Award redemption — where to spend the points
Qsuite is the easier and cheaper points-cabin to access in 2026. Avios via Qatar Privilege Club (now the carrier's primary currency) prices most long-haul Qsuites at 70,000–110,000 Avios one-way DOH-Europe, with cash co-pays under USD 300. American AAdvantage prices US-Doha Qsuite at 75,000 miles one-way during web-special windows. Alaska Mileage Plan still publishes a Qatar partner award though availability has tightened. For Etihad Apartment, the strongest play is American AAdvantage at 115,000 miles one-way US-Abu Dhabi in First; Etihad Guest itself prices the Apartment at 136,250 miles plus high cash co-pay (the Skywards problem under a different brand). The Residence does not release award space at all in 2026 — paid cash only.
When to pick each carrier
Choose Qsuite when value, availability and the couple/quad configuration matter more than headline cabin product — it is the rational pick for most long-haul Gulf-Europe and Gulf-Asia routings, and the only sensible pick if you're travelling as a quad. Choose Etihad Apartment when you specifically want a true First cabin without paying Singapore Suites money and when your routing lands on AUH-LHR, JFK, SYD or MEL; the Apartment is the only First product genuinely undercut on rate by Emirates First First. Choose Etihad Residence only for milestone events where the cabin is the trip itself — there is no other reason to spend USD 28,000 on a single-direction commercial flight.
