Best Luxury Beach Resorts in Zanzibar 2026: Six Coast-and-Stone-Town Stays Tested

The Lucalvry Edit · Updated May 14, 2026 · 11 min read

Six Zanzibar properties we paid to test in 2026 — the northern-tip beach flagships, the boutique Stone Town conversions, and the smartest sub-USD 800 sleepers on the east coast.

Our methodology

Six paid stays at Zanzibar luxury properties between June 2024 and April 2026, deliberately spanning dry season (June-October), long rains (March-May), and short rains (November). No comp nights, no press rates. Each property assessed across beach quality and tide-independence, cultural-anchor product where applicable, food under half-board, and two structured service-recovery tests including connection delays.

Zuri Zanzibar, Kendwa

#1 · The benchmark northern-tip beach flagship with the strongest design programme

Zuri Zanzibar, Kendwa

4.8USD 850–USD 1,200 per night, HB

Zuri Zanzibar is the strongest design-led beach property in East Africa — 55 villas and bungalows on Kendwa beach (the best year-round swimmable beach on Zanzibar) with the most ambitious contemporary-design programme on the island, a properly serious food scene across three restaurants, and operational standards that have compounded since the 2018 opening. The defining northern-tip Zanzibar booking.

Pros

  • + Strongest design-led beach property in East Africa
  • + Kendwa beach is the best year-round swimmable beach on Zanzibar
  • + Properly serious food scene across three on-property restaurants

Cons

  • Most expensive northern-tip property at full rate
  • Kendwa village is busier than Matemwe or Pongwe — accept the trade for the beach quality
Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Stone Town

#2 · The benchmark Stone Town cultural-anchor property

Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Stone Town

4.7USD 720–USD 1,100 per night, B&B

Park Hyatt Zanzibar is the strongest urban hotel on the East African coast — 67 rooms in two converted Stone Town buildings (the historic Mambo Msiige and a contemporary addition) directly on the seafront, with the best Stone Town location, a properly excellent food programme, and the operational depth Park Hyatt delivers across its global portfolio. The smartest Stone Town booking, full stop.

Pros

  • + Strongest urban hotel on the East African coast
  • + Direct seafront Stone Town location
  • + Park Hyatt operational standards across every touchpoint

Cons

  • Stone Town is a cultural-anchor stop, not a beach base — pair with a coastal property
  • Older Mambo Msiige building has some character-rich room quirks
Mnemba Lodge by &Beyond (north-east coast)

#3 · Most exclusive private-island-adjacent beach property

Mnemba Lodge by &Beyond (north-east coast)

4.8USD 1,200–USD 1,800 per night, FI

Mnemba Lodge by &Beyond on the eastern tip facing the Mnemba Island marine reserve — 15 beachfront bandas with the strongest snorkelling-and-diving access on Zanzibar (the Mnemba reef is genuinely the best dive site on the island), the longest-tenured ultra-luxury operator on the island, and the most personal service of any property on this list. Expensive but the dive-access and exclusivity justify it.

Pros

  • + Strongest snorkelling-and-diving access on Zanzibar — direct Mnemba reef proximity
  • + Longest-tenured ultra-luxury operator on Zanzibar
  • + 15-banda scale delivers genuinely intimate service

Cons

  • Most expensive property on this list
  • Eastern coast has tide-affected beach access — confirm tide tables for swimming windows
The Residence Zanzibar (south-west coast)

#4 · Largest-scale beach resort with the strongest spa and family programme

The Residence Zanzibar (south-west coast)

4.6USD 680–USD 980 per night, HB

The Residence Zanzibar sits on the south-western Kizimkazi coast — 66 beachfront villas across an extensive property with the strongest spa programme on Zanzibar, the most family-friendly layout of any luxury property on the island, and the dolphin-and-whale-watching access that the south-west coast uniquely delivers. The smartest pick for families and travellers who want resort-scale amenities.

Pros

  • + Strongest spa programme on Zanzibar
  • + Most family-friendly luxury property layout on the island
  • + South-west coast dolphin and humpback-whale-watching access

Cons

  • South-west location is further from Stone Town and the airport (90-minute transfer)
  • Resort scale means less personal service than the boutique properties
Emerson on Hurumzi, Stone Town

#5 · Smaller-scale Stone Town heritage boutique with the most authentic character

Emerson on Hurumzi, Stone Town

4.6USD 320–USD 480 per night, B&B

Emerson on Hurumzi is the most character-rich Stone Town heritage hotel — 16 themed rooms in a converted 19th-century merchant's palace, with the city's strongest rooftop restaurant (Tea House) and a meaningfully lower rate than the Park Hyatt for travellers who prioritise heritage character over modern hotel amenities. The smartest sub-USD 500 Stone Town booking. Service is properly intimate at 16 rooms.

Pros

  • + Most character-rich Stone Town heritage hotel
  • + Strongest rooftop restaurant in Stone Town — the Tea House at sunset
  • + Smartest sub-USD 500 Stone Town booking

Cons

  • 19th-century building means small bathrooms and quirky room layouts
  • No swimming pool — a real trade for travellers wanting hotel-pool downtime
Matemwe Lodge by Asilia (east coast)

#6 · Smartest east-coast diving-led boutique

Matemwe Lodge by Asilia (east coast)

4.5USD 480–USD 720 per night, FB

Matemwe Lodge by Asilia sits on Zanzibar's quieter east coast facing the Mnemba reef — 16 villas with private plunge pools, the strongest diving programme of any east-coast property, and the operational depth Asilia delivers across its Tanzanian portfolio. Tide-affected beach swimming but excellent dive access. The smartest east-coast booking for diving-led travellers.

Pros

  • + Strongest diving programme of any east-coast property
  • + Asilia operational depth across the stay
  • + Private plunge pools and meaningfully quieter coastal setting

Cons

  • Tide-affected beach swimming — narrow daily windows for in-ocean swimming
  • East coast is further from Stone Town and the airport than northern properties
