Mayfair's art-deco grande dame — afternoon tea since 1856, an art-deco lobby that defines London hotel iconography, and a 2023 basement spa that finally answers the only criticism the property carried.

What works

  • The most recognisable art-deco hotel interior in London
  • Afternoon tea programme is the industry reference
  • Sister to The Connaught and The Berkeley with shared Maybourne service standards

Watch-outs

  • Standard rooms are tighter than peers at this rate
  • Davies and Brook restaurant slot still vacant — F&B is below the Connaught Grill or Berkeley Restaurant

Claridge's occupies the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in Mayfair, the most central London-luxury address — Bond Street Elizabeth line in four minutes, Berkeley Square in three, Hyde Park in twelve. The hotel has run continuously since 1856; the current art-deco refit dates to the 1929 redesign by Oswald Milne, who introduced the silver-leaf staircase, the Foyer chandelier, and the geometric stone floor that survives in the lobby today. The Maybourne Group acquired the property in 2006 and has run it alongside The Connaught (Mount Street) and The Berkeley (Knightsbridge) since.

The 2023 basement spa addition — Claridge's Spa, designed by André Fu across 8,000 square feet — closed the property's last meaningful gap versus peers. The 12-metre lap pool with vaulted ceiling, the four treatment rooms, and the Sisley signature programme finally give Claridge's a wellness offer to match the Mayfair rate. The Davies and Brook restaurant slot (vacated by Daniel Humm in 2024) remains under renovation at time of writing; afternoon tea in the Foyer and cocktails at The Painter's Room hold the F&B programme until the replacement opens. Book via Maybourne Discovery or Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts for breakfast for two and a £100 property credit at the same rate.
