Best Luxury Safari Camps in Greater Kruger 2026: Six Sabi Sand Stays Tested
The Lucalvry Edit · Updated May 14, 2026 · 12 min read
Six Sabi Sand and Greater Kruger camps we paid to test in 2026 — the leopard-territory flagships, the family-run boutiques, and the smartest sub-USD 1,800 sleepers.
Our methodology
Six paid stays at Sabi Sand and Greater Kruger camps between June 2024 and April 2026, deliberately spanning dry-season (May–September) and green-season (December–March) conditions. No comp nights, no press rates. Each camp assessed across game-drive output across at least eight drives, guide-tracker pairing, suite product, full-board food, and two structured service-recovery tests including charter rebookings.
In this round-up
- 1. Singita Ebony Lodge, Sabi Sand — The benchmark Sabi Sand flagship with the strongest guiding team
- 2. Londolozi Tree Camp — Family-owned flagship with the strongest single-property heritage
- 3. MalaMala Main Camp — Largest private traversing concession with the most consistent Big Five drives
- 4. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge — Architecturally most ambitious lodge with the strongest spa programme
- 5. Lion Sands River Lodge — Sand River-frontage lodge with the strongest treehouse programme
- 6. Royal Malewane (Thornybush) — Greater Kruger flagship with the strongest single-camp food programme

#1 · The benchmark Sabi Sand flagship with the strongest guiding team
Singita Ebony Lodge, Sabi Sand
Singita Ebony remains the property by which other African safari lodges are measured. 12 suites on Singita's 18,000-hectare private concession in the southern Sabi Sand, with the strongest guide-tracker programme in African safari, the operational depth that 30+ years of Singita has built, and the highest leopard-sighting rate of any Sabi Sand camp on this list. Most expensive but defensibly so. The defining ultra-luxury African safari stay.
Pros
- + Strongest guide-tracker programme in African safari, full stop
- + Highest leopard-sighting rate of any Sabi Sand camp tested
- + 30+ years of Singita operational compounding
Cons
- − Most expensive property on this list — meaningfully so
- − 12-suite scale means structural availability tightness in dry season

#2 · Family-owned flagship with the strongest single-property heritage
Londolozi Tree Camp
Londolozi Tree Camp is the smallest of Londolozi's five Sabi Sand camps — six suites on the western Sabi Sand with the strongest single-property heritage in African safari (the Varty family's 90+ years on the land), a guide team that has compounded across two generations, and the most environmentally restored private concession in southern Africa. Comparable game-viewing to Singita Ebony at a 15–20% discount. The smartest ultra-luxury Sabi Sand booking.
Pros
- + Strongest single-property heritage in African safari — 90+ years of Varty family land restoration
- + Two-generation guide-team continuity
- + 15–20% rate discount to Singita Ebony for comparable game-viewing
Cons
- − Six-suite scale means availability is even tighter than Singita
- − Less polished public-area design than Singita Ebony

#3 · Largest private traversing concession with the most consistent Big Five drives
MalaMala Main Camp
MalaMala Main Camp sits on MalaMala's 13,300-hectare private concession (the largest private safari concession in Sabi Sand, with the longest Sand River frontage in the reserve). 19 suites in a refurbished 1960s-vintage main camp, with the most consistent Big Five drive output of any property on this list and a meaningfully lower rate than Singita or Londolozi. The smartest sub-USD 2,500 Sabi Sand booking with full Big Five expectations.
Pros
- + Largest private concession in Sabi Sand — most consistent Big Five drive output
- + Longest Sand River frontage gives reliable game concentration
- + Meaningfully lower rate than Singita or Londolozi
Cons
- − 19-suite scale means less personal feel than the boutique camps
- − 1960s-vintage main camp is character-rich but design-conservative

#4 · Architecturally most ambitious lodge with the strongest spa programme
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is the most architecturally ambitious safari lodge in southern Africa — 13 subterranean suites carved into the landscape with private plunge pools, a spa programme that is the strongest of any Sabi Sand camp, and the longstanding Sabi Sabi guide team. Game-viewing is excellent though slightly behind the Singita-Londolozi-MalaMala tier. The right pick for design-led travellers and honeymooners.
Pros
- + Most architecturally ambitious safari lodge in southern Africa
- + Strongest spa programme of any Sabi Sand camp
- + Subterranean suite layout with private plunge pools
Cons
- − Game-viewing slightly behind the Singita-Londolozi-MalaMala tier in our drives
- − Subterranean layout is not for travellers who prefer treetop or river-frontage suites

#5 · Sand River-frontage lodge with the strongest treehouse programme
Lion Sands River Lodge
Lion Sands River Lodge sits directly on the Sand River with the strongest treehouse-sleepout programme in Sabi Sand (three properly engineered treehouses for overnight stays away from camp). 18 rooms in a refurbished main lodge, competent guiding, and a meaningfully lower rate than the flagships. The smartest pick for travellers who want the treehouse experience as a 1-night addition.
Pros
- + Strongest treehouse-sleepout programme in Sabi Sand
- + Direct Sand River frontage
- + Meaningfully lower rate than the Sabi Sand flagships
Cons
- − Guiding is competent rather than flagship-grade
- − 18-room scale means less personal service than the boutiques

#6 · Greater Kruger flagship with the strongest single-camp food programme
Royal Malewane (Thornybush)
Royal Malewane is technically Thornybush rather than Sabi Sand but the standard combine-with-Sabi-Sand booking pattern is well-established. Eight suites on the Royal Portfolio's Thornybush concession, with the strongest food programme of any African safari camp tested, the Royal Portfolio's flagship-grade service standard, and a private spa programme that rivals Earth Lodge. Game-viewing is excellent for Thornybush. The right pick for food-led safari travellers.
Pros
- + Strongest food programme of any African safari camp tested
- + Royal Portfolio's flagship-grade service standard
- + Eight-suite scale delivers genuinely intimate service
Cons
- − Thornybush traversing is meaningfully smaller than Sabi Sand reserves
- − Most expensive Thornybush camp at full rate
