The Algarve in 3 Days: The Lucalvry Itinerary

By Alex Marlowe · Updated 2026-05-17 · 13 min read

A coast-by-coast Algarve itinerary for three days — the Vicentina cliffs of the western coast, the Vila Vita and Vilamoura strip in the centre, the Ria Formosa lagoon to the east, and the four restaurants worth booking ahead.

Day 1

Western coast: Sagres, Praia do Beliche, Lagos

  1. Morning (9:30am)

Drive west to Sagres (45 minutes from Lagos along the N125, longer from Albufeira)

Drive west to Sagres (45 minutes from Lagos along the N125, longer from Albufeira). The Sagres Fortress on Cape St Vincent is the most westerly point of mainland Europe — allow an hour for the cliff-top walk and the lighthouse vantage. The wind is a feature, not a bug; bring a layer.

  2. Late morning (11:30am)

Drive 8 minutes back to Praia do Beliche for an hour at the beach — the smallest of the cape beaches, accessed by a wooden staircase down the cliff, with the cleanest water on the western coast and a beach-shack café (Pedras Negras) that does the morning espresso.

  3. Lunch (1:30pm)

A Eira do Mel in Vila do Bispo — a Michelin-recognised regional kitchen on the road back to Lagos, with sea-bream baked in salt and a small but serious Algarve wine list. Book a week ahead.

Lagos old town walk — the city walls, the Igreja de Santo António gilded chapel, the slave-market memorial, and a 30-minute drop in to the Sciencia Viva centre if travelling with children. Drive south to Ponta da Piedade for the cliff arch sequence at golden hour.

  5. Sunset (7pm)

Drive back to your central-coast hotel (45 minutes to Carvoeiro, 60 to Vilamoura)

Drive back to your central-coast hotel (45 minutes to Carvoeiro, 60 to Vilamoura). Sunset along the way at Praia da Marinha if timing allows — the most photographed Algarve cliff arc.

Bon Bon in Carvoeiro — one of the Algarve's two Michelin-starred tasting kitchens (€140), with the most reliable wine pairing in the region for Alentejo and Setúbal small producers. Book a fortnight ahead.

Day 2

Central coast: Vilamoura, Praia da Marinha, Vila Vita afternoon

  1. Morning (10am)

    A slow start

A slow start. The Vilamoura marina at 10am is the cleanest morning vantage of the central strip — coffee at Pinto's Bar on the marina edge, then a 30-minute walk along the boardwalk to Praia da Falésia. The 6km cliff-backed beach is the central Algarve's headline beach; an hour with a swim is enough.

  2. Lunch (1pm)

Veneza in Paderne — a 25-minute drive inland, family-run since 1947, the regional reference for cataplana and a wine list with 1,000 Portuguese references. Booking is essential at weekends; walk-ins work mid-week before 1:30pm.

  3. Afternoon (3pm)

Vila Vita Parc afternoon — the day-pass programme runs at €80 per person and includes pool, beach access and one cocktail at the Bela Vita beach club. The cliff-edge garden walk to the private cove (Praia das Atlanticas) is the hotel's defining experience and is worth the day pass for non-residents.

  4. Sunset (7pm)

Praia da Marinha at sunset — drive 25 minutes east to the Marinha cliff steps, walk the…

Praia da Marinha at sunset — drive 25 minutes east to the Marinha cliff steps, walk the upper trail for the arch panorama, then descend to the beach for the last 30 minutes of light.

Vista at Bela Vista Hotel in Praia da Rocha — the Algarve's other Michelin-starred kitchen (€135), in a converted 19th-century manor on the Portimão headland. The fresh-fish course and the Madeira pairing are the kitchen's signatures.

Day 3

Eastern Algarve: Tavira, Ria Formosa boat, Olhão market

  1. Morning (9am)

Drive east to Tavira (60 minutes from Vilamoura along the A22)

Drive east to Tavira (60 minutes from Vilamoura along the A22). Park near the old Roman bridge, walk through the old town to the Castelo de Tavira garden vantage. Allow 90 minutes.

Pre-booked private boat through the Ria Formosa lagoon (Formosamar runs a 2-hour private trip at €240, departing from Olhão at 11am). The route covers the Armona and Culatra island fishing villages, with one swim stop in the lagoon channels and a short walk through Culatra's car-free village.

  3. Lunch (1:30pm)

Lunch on the boat or at Casa do Pasto in Olhão — small petisco plates, a half-litre of the local Tavira white, and the harbour view as the lagoon boats unload.

Olhão fish market for the late-afternoon catch — the smaller of the two Algarve fish markets but the more characterful, with the smaller-day boats unloading until 5pm. A 30-minute stop. Drive back west to your hotel via the A22 (60 minutes to Vilamoura).

  5. Dinner (8:30pm)

Henrique Leis in Almancil for the farewell — Belgian chef, regional Portuguese produce, a 25-cover dining room run with the warmth most Algarve fine-dining rooms lose. The wine cellar is the deepest in the region for Alentejo reds.
