United's harmonised long-haul business class — 1-2-1 reverse herringbone Polaris seat across the entire long-haul fleet, the strongest US-carrier Polaris Lounge network (EWR, ORD, IAH, SFO, LAX, IAD, HND), and the new B787-10 and A321XLR sub-fleets that finally added the suite door SQ and Qatar set as standard.

United launched the Polaris brand in 2016 with the rollout of a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone seat across the long-haul fleet — a 5-year programme that finished retrofitting the last B777-200ER in 2023. The current cabin is harmonised across B777 and B787 frames (and the new A321XLR for east-coast-to-Europe rotations from 2025), and the consistency is genuinely useful for award bookings: any Polaris cabin will deliver the same seat regardless of equipment swap, which Delta and American cannot guarantee until their respective retrofit programmes complete.

The suite door — the feature that defines premium Business Class in 2026 — is currently only deployed on the B787-10 sub-fleet (10 frames, expanding) and the A321XLR (10 frames on order, first delivery 2025). All other Polaris frames carry the original 2016 product without a door. The Polaris Lounge network is the brand's strongest single differentiator versus US peers: dedicated Business Class lounges at EWR, ORD, IAH, SFO, LAX, IAD, and Tokyo Haneda, with sit-down restaurant service, full daybeds, and (at EWR and ORD) shower suites with Cowshed amenities. Book Aeroplan 70k partner award one-way transatlantic — the strongest fixed-price Business Class redemption in the genre after Virgin Flying Club's Delta-One 50k rate.

Who it's for

Right fit

  • Aeroplan and LifeMiles holders booking transatlantic Business
  • Travellers booking on revenue with MileagePlus status and Polaris Lounge access

Look elsewhere if

  • Travellers wanting suite doors fleet-wide — wait for B787-10 routings or pick Delta One Suite
  • Asia routes wanting top-tier catering — Asian carriers lead by a wide margin

Frequently asked

United Polaris or Delta One Suite on JFK-LHR?

Delta on hardware (suite door across the A350 and most A330-900 fleet); United on lounge (the Polaris Lounge at EWR is the strongest US Business Class lounge). United operates EWR-LHR rather than JFK-LHR — Delta is the only choice from JFK.

Which routes have the door-equipped Polaris seat?

B787-10 and A321XLR frames only. The 787-10 deployment includes EWR-NRT, EWR-LHR (selected rotations), and SFO-AKL. The A321XLR enters service in 2025 on east-coast US to western Europe (EWR-Edinburgh, EWR-Reykjavik are the launch routes).

What works

  • Polaris Lounge network at 7 US hubs is unique to United among US carriers
  • 1-2-1 reverse herringbone deployed across the entire long-haul fleet (B777, B787, A321XLR)
  • Saks Fifth Avenue bedding programme is the strongest US-carrier Business soft product

Watch-outs

  • Most of the fleet still lacks the suite door — only B787-10 and A321XLR carry it currently
  • Catering quality is a clear step below Delta One Suite and Asian-carrier Business peers
