SWISS's First Class on the B777-300ER — eight enclosed suites with sliding doors at the front of the cabin, Confiserie Sprüngli chocolates, and the most discreet First Class lounge experience in Europe (the SWISS First Lounge at ZRH with rooftop terrace and direct apron transfer).

SWISS reintroduced First Class on the B777-300ER in 2016, eight enclosed suites at the front of the cabin with sliding doors that fully separate the seat from the aisle. The product runs on six routes from Zurich (JFK, EWR, LAX, NRT, HKG, SIN) and a seasonal seventh (BKK in northern winter). The current A340-300 fleet still carries the legacy open-suite product; the retrofit programme to align A340s with the 777 hardware is scheduled through 2027. Book the 777 routes explicitly — the legacy A340 product is a meaningfully different experience.

The defining differentiator versus Lufthansa First (the obvious peer) is the ground experience at Zurich. The SWISS First Lounge in Terminal A's E-gates building covers two floors with a rooftop terrace, a private dining room, a dedicated cigar lounge, and a quiet wing — but the headline is the Mercedes S-Class transfer from the lounge to the aircraft door on the apron, which removes the need to board through the gate entirely. The transfer is included for all SWISS First passengers and the experience is the closest European equivalent to the Lufthansa First Class Terminal at Frankfurt. Aeroplan at 80,000 points one-way ZRH-JFK remains the genre-leading award redemption; Miles & More at 110,000 carries CHF 800 fuel surcharges that push the cash-equivalent above paid Business in many cases.

Who it's for

  • Travellers wanting onboard shower (only Emirates and Etihad offer this)
  • Routes outside the six-city First Class deployment

Frequently asked

SWISS First or Lufthansa First?

SWISS for the smaller cabin (8 suites vs Lufthansa's 8 on A380, 4 on 747), the ZRH ground experience, and the Aeroplan award rate; Lufthansa for the FRA First Class Terminal (a separate building from the main terminal with the genre's best ground experience). Both at the same in-flight hardware tier — pick on hub.

How does the ZRH First Lounge ground transfer work?

First Class passengers transfer from the SWISS First Lounge to the aircraft door by Mercedes S-Class, driven on the apron from the lounge's airside exit. The journey takes 3 to 8 minutes depending on aircraft stand. Lounge access is included for SWISS First Class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members travelling in any cabin.

Award sweet spot

Aeroplan 80,000 points ZRH-JFK in First — the genre's best European-First redemption. Miles & More 110,000 miles is the home-programme rate but YQ surcharges (~CHF 800) make Aeroplan preferable.

What works

  • Smallest First Class cabin in Europe (8 suites) — service ratio leads the segment
  • ZRH First Lounge with rooftop and direct apron-side car transfer is the best ground experience in Europe
  • Aeroplan partner award at 80,000 points one-way ZRH-JFK is the genre's best European-First redemption

Watch-outs

  • A340 retrofit programme runs through 2027 — older frames still fly the legacy open suite
  • First Class only on 6 routes — the deployment is narrower than Lufthansa or BA First
